Frequently Asked Questions

Will this work with my website?

Yes! Your app will present your website content similarly to how it is displayed in a mobile web browser such as Mobile Safari or Mobile Chrome.

To try it out for your website click here to enter your URL and build your app for free in minutes!

Most websites will display automatically. Some websites that require authentication and internal corporate sites may required additional configuration. Please review our documentation for more details.

Will I be able to publish my app to the Apple App Store and Google Play?

Yes! App stores require that apps be designed for mobile use and that they provide features that offer more than a mobile website. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly with suitable text size and UI elements. Add native features and functionality using the GoNative app builder such as native navigation menus and push notifications.

See our documentation for detailed tips on publishing your app: https://gonative.readme.io/docs/self-publishing-guide

GoNative customers can also use our publishing service to have our team publish your app on your behalf, with a guarantee that your app will be successfully approved.

What's different than a basic webview wrapper app?

Using GoNative you'll build an app that presents your mobile website through a web view. However, GoNative provides much more than a "website wrapper" as you'll build a stunning native app with advanced native functionality and features.

You can add native navigation menus, push notifications from OneSignal and other push providers, and incorporate our premium native plugins to add functionality ranging from biometric authentication to In-App Purchases and much more.

You'll also benefit from the GoNative build platform which has been supported and maintained since early 2014. As iOS and Android changes are released you can rebuild your app using the GoNative App Builder to maintain compatibility while avoiding the overhead that comes from maintaining your own code base.

Should I build a native app from scratch versus converting my website?

We are continually impressed by the quality and functionality of apps created by our customers using GoNative.

If your website doesn't meet the requirements you have for your app consider a new web development framework that will enable you to add the required functionality.

The costs of building and maintaining a web app are typically far less than a native app, and you will only have a single web app to maintain versus separate iOS and Android native apps.

Also review our Native Plugins which provide a full native experience for many 3rd party services and device features. For instance using the Twilio Native Plugin will provide full-screen front and back camera video calling along with call interruption handling. And our native media player allows you to play audio with the device screen turned off and control playback via the native lock screen interface. Yes, you can build an app with Skype and Spotify capabilities using GoNative!

How much does this cost?

There is no cost to create an app for evaluation and testing purposes. You can test your app on our simulator devices in your browser and on physical iOS and Android devices.

A valid license is required to publish your app to the app stores, or for any other commercial purpose.

The only required license is a Single Application License which may be purchased directly from https://gonative.io/pricing.

In addition to the app license, we offer a variety of optional premium add-ons and services.

  • Push Notifications, including OneSignal https://gonative.io/push
  • Native Plugins that provide access to a range of device functionality and 3rd party services https://gonative.io/plugins
  • Our Full-Service App Configuration service, where our team handles completes detailed configuration to produce a publish-ready app using the GoNative platform
  • Our App Store Publishing service, where our team completes all steps that are required to publish your app to the app stores and guarantees approval
  • Custom development to extend the GoNative platform to integrate SDKs and add advanced functionality for your specific use case

Please see examples of recently published apps at https://gonative.io/examples.

Do you provide support?

Yes! We do our best to respond to all email inquiries as time allows.

For priority support including technical support by phone you may purchase a professional support plan.

GoNative also offers eligible enterprise clients options for an SLA with guaranteed response based on incident severity.

How do I apply my license to my app?

After the purchase of your license, you will receive via email a copy of your executed license agreement, and instructions to apply your license to your app.

To apply your license, you will be asked for the iOS Bundle Id and Android Package Name you will use for your app store submissions. Generally, these identifiers look like com.example.app or similar. After applying your license, it is not required to re-download or re-compile your app.

If you've built your app through our online build platform, you will also be asked for the Private Management URL for the app you will be publishing. This is the link that was emailed to you after building through our website at https://gonative.io/new.

How many apps can be published with each license?

Each license allows you to publish one app, which includes versions for both iOS and Android.

You may modify and rebuild your app as many times as you wish.

All future updates to the GoNative iOS and Android source code are included in the price of the license.

Can I modify the source code for my app?

Yes! Full source code for iOS and Android is available for download and further customization in Xcode and Android Studio.

How do I integrate my app with a third-party SDK?

Integration with SDKs from third-party vendors is a differentiating reason to build an app with GoNative.

Our engineering team will integrate the required SDK within our build platform for iOS and/or Android so that the SDK is incorporated automatically during each build of your app.

We will work with you to define specifications for accessing the functionality offered by the SDK through the GoNative JavaScript Bridge.

We have extensive experience integrating push notification providers, analytics tools, video and media providers, and more. Contact us for details.

How do I update my app in the future?

All updates to your website content will be automatically reflected in your mobile app.

Changes to your app icon and other native elements require your app be rebuilt on our online platform or locally. Rebuilding online provides the latest GoNative code, when building locally you will need to manually pull and merge from our GitHub repositories.

Many native features can be modified without requiring an app rebuild by using the GoNative JavaScript Bridge. Refer to our documentation for details

What are the privacy and security implications of using GoNative?

By design all data and network traffic from your app goes directly to your web server, exactly as it would if the user browsed your website via Mobile Safari on iOS or Mobile Chrome on Android. No website data whatsoever passes through any GoNative servers, and your app does not depend on GoNative's servers or uptime to function.

Therefore, your app relies on the same security, encryption, and access that exists on your website.

A license is required prior to publishing your app or for any commercial use of GoNative source code. Your app will check for a valid license when launched on a user's device. No personal information of any kind is retained in relation to the license check Once an app is successfully published it will continue to function indefinitely with no requirements from GoNative.

Based on this architecture, using GoNative does not introduce any additional known requirements to comply to the new standards introduced by the European data protection law known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in effect starting May 25, 2018. Please note that this article is not intended to convey or constitute legal advice.

At times customers require independent security assessments including dynamic and static testing of the app and app source code to meet their own compliance requirements. GoNative is available to assist in these reviews on a case-by-case basis for a nominal service fee.

Which versions of Android and iOS will my app support?

The core GoNative app supports iOS 12.5+ and Android 8.1+ including both phones and tablets.

Support for Push Notification providers and Native Plugins vary by the SDKs and device functionality required.

We continually release updates to support the latest operating system updates and new devices.

How do I publish an internal employee-only app?

The Apple App Store and Google Play Store are intended for public apps that can be downloaded and used by anyone.

Apps that provide public content and also include a logged-in area for employees are typically acceptable. However, corporate apps such as scheduling, timesheet, employee portal/intranet type apps must be published to a private app store or distributed via an MDM solution.

Contact our support team for guidance based on your specific requirements.

Is there a discount for an Android-only or iOS-only license?

Unfortunately we do not discount our license for use on a single platform.

Currently our platform is designed to create one app with iOS and Android versions and we are not able to license an app for a single platform.
